Excercise 10 Moment and Gesture (A 10ft Snowman!)

With temperatures down to -18˚C in the evening and yet another 12 inches of snow fall in parts of Oxfordshire, photography seemed to good an opportunity to pass up. A 10ft snowman in the centre of Henley on Thames was proving to be a real people magnet.

The best thing about street photography is that it is possible for the viewer of an image to see more than the photographer. A factor of towns is that there are often a lot of things happening, even in a small area such as a market square, at any moment in time. Photography allows us to freeze one of those moments and study all of the small dramas that are taking place. While photographing the photographer, I was not always aware what was going on in the viewfinder, for example I hadn’t noticed the woman laughing in the background. The final image is stronger and more interesting for that.
